He Brought a Telescope to a Sumo Match
Got Sagan on my mind.
It’s not widely documented online. It comes from one of William Irwin Thompson’s spoken stories—something he told in lectures and seminars rather than in his published books. Thompson often used H.G. Wells’s idea of a “Freemasonry of Science”—a transnational ethical brotherhood of scientists—to illustrate moments when scientific elites almost acted as a planetary moral order. The episode is his claim that Werner Heisenberg briefly considered organizing a kind of secret international scientific compact during the early atomic era.
Thompson said that Heisenberg, horrified by the implications of nuclear chain reactions, contemplated whether scientists across nations might quietly agree not to pursue the bomb—essentially a real-world version of Wells’s imagined “Freemasonry of Science.”
The idea was that scientists, not governments, understood the danger first. They might form a moral fraternity transcending national loyalties. They could collectively refuse to weaponize nuclear physics.
Thompson’s point was not that this nearly happened in a literal organizational sense, but that the *possibility* flickered—a moment when scientific conscience briefly outweighed geopolitical loyalty.
He framed it as a moment when the planetary mind almost awakened. This is his drumbeat: planetary consciousness, or "planetization" replacing civilization. This is classic Thompson: mythopoetic macrohistory, where historical actors become symbols of civilizational thresholds.
Thompson’s story rests on real historical tensions. Heisenberg did worry about the bomb early. Heisenberg understood the physics of chain reactions by 1939 and was deeply uneasy about the implications. So he did not push aggressively for a German bomb. Historians still debate whether he intentionally slowed the German program, he miscalculated critical mass (on purpose to make it appear unfeasible?), or he simply lacked resources.
Whichever, the fact remains that Heisenberg did not become Germany’s Oppenheimer.
One twist in the story is that the scientists wanted to make certain that a bomb was even possible before they took action against it. How ironic it would've been if they had verified its feasibility and thus ensured its invention.
There WERE informal transnational scientific conversations. Before the war fully hardened borders, European physicists (Bohr, Heisenberg, Fermi, Szilard) were part of a cosmopolitan network. Thompson’s story amplifies this into a near-mythic “invisible college.” Bohr later explicitly advocated a global scientific brotherhood. Bohr’s “Open World” letters to Roosevelt and Churchill were attempts to create a transnational scientific governance structure—something very close to Wells’s idea.
So Thompson’s anecdote is not fabricated; it’s a mythologized synthesis of real historical dynamics.
Thompson used the Heisenberg moment to illustrate the brief emergence of planetary consciousness. Scientists glimpsed the species-level danger before politicians did. The story points up the failure of moral elites to restrain technological power. The “Freemasonry of Science” did not materialize; national militaries won.
The tragedy of antiquity is that the Greco-Roman mind didn't raise its sights above its precious "poleis". The tragedy of modernity is that the planetary mind awakens only in flashes, never fully institutionalizing itself. In Thompson’s macrohistorical style, Heisenberg becomes a symbol of the scientist as planetary guardian, thwarted by the inertia of civilization.

This isn't because I approve of the spy network giving the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. It's because Bill exemplified a character type described by Herbert Marcuse, the one-dimensional man. A p'tit-boo at that. I bet he sold America down the river when he went into business. Not out of treachery but out of Gekko-scale greed. He foreclosed on America's future because he didn't believe in such futures. His immorality was structural.

Sagan was a stabilizer in an era that required a perturbator. He should have issued clear, actionable proposals. He needed to become a policy architect, not a cosmic poet.
He needed to name the structural enemies of scientific rationality, expose the incentive systems that produce anti‑science sentiment, challenge the institutions that profit from ignorance...
He needed to become a dissident, not a diplomat.
Sagan should have said:
“The greatest threat to our cosmic future is a financial system that cannot think beyond quarterly returns.”
This is not partisan.
It is civilizational.
He needed to make reactionary finance the villain in the cosmic narrative.
Financialization is a form of civilizational self‑harm.
This is the narrative he never told:
We could be exploring the solar system.
We could be curing diseases.
We could be building planetary infrastructure.
We could be stabilizing climate systems.
We could be expanding human potential.
But reactionary finance:
diverts capital into speculation
suppresses long-term investment
captures political institutions
undermines public goods
accelerates civilizational decay
Sagan needed to say:
“The stars are not out of reach. They are being held hostage.”
He needed a counter‑myth:
the cosmos as destiny
science as liberation
long-term thinking as rebellion
exploration as moral duty
investment as cosmic responsibility
He needed to make the future sacred.
Sagan confronted:
pseudoscience
superstition
nuclear war
But he never confronted:
Wall Street
private equity
financial deregulation
corporate capture
rentier extraction
He should have said:
“The greatest threat to humanity is not ignorance — it is the concentration of power in institutions that cannot think beyond profit.”
This would have been dangerous. But it would have been effective.
He needed to become a founder of a movement, not a narrator of wonder. He needed to become a political cosmologist, not just a cosmic poet.
Sagan was preaching near the moment the Creative Minority failed. In the late 20th century, the creative elite (scientists, engineers, builders, explorers) was displaced by:
reactionary finance
rentier capital
short-term extraction
shareholder primacy
deregulated speculation
institutional capture
This new elite was incapable of creativity by design
